Great Job STARS!!

This week Southern California saw the very best Travel Baseball teams from around the nation come together for the Cecil Fielder “ELITE” World Series.  For the 25th consecutive year the STARS lead the way in San Diego…having two teams play in the nationally broadcast championship game.  The STARS won the 8U “Elite” Division and finished 2nd in the 11U “Elite” Division.
The 8U team defeated McAllen, Texas in the semi-finals and the SGV Hustle in the championship game.  The 11U team beat the San Diego Show 7-0 in the quarter finals.  The STARS beat the Dynasty Jacks out of Houston Texas in the semi-finals 4-3. Unfortunately the STARS came up short in the championship game, against the #1 ranked team in the nation the SGV Hustle.

Congratulations to the Boys!

San Diego STARS roll!

Wow…what a weekend of San Diego STARS baseball.  At the 11th Annual San Diego Open the STARS 8U team, playing in the 9U division had a great 1st day out scoring their two opponents 37 – 9 and getting the  #1 seed for Sunday’s final day.  Sunday saw the STARS 8U matched up against their older brothers, STARS 9U.  The older brothers prevailed.  STARS 9U were the #2 seed in their pool having lost to a very  strong team from LA, the SoCal Outlaws (combination of Outlaws and Stingrays)… but revenge was sweet as they knocked them off to win the championship 4 – 3.  Great game!
The drama was just beginning!

The 11U STARS, playing in the 12U  division, were also seeded #1 going into Sunday.  Beat the IV Stoic out of Imperial Valley their first game… 8 – 7.  Second game saw on old rival in the very tough Alpine Force.  Down by 2 in the bottom of the 6th inning Brodie Romero’s 2-run homer run tied it.  Followed by a  Wyatt Lannom double and a Ben Hart walk-off single.  Fun just beginning!

Championship Game… San Diego STARS – Temecula Gamerz.  Great game!  Tied up after 6 innings.  Go to the “California tie-breaker”.  Each team starts their half inning with a runner on 2nd base.  7th inning…Gamerz go ahead…STARS tied it.  8th inning – Gamerz go ahead… STARS tied it, have bases loaded 1 out – line shot grounder, diving catch by the 2nd basemen, great throw to the plate gets the force-out.  next guy grounds out.  On to the 9th inning – Gamerz do not score … STARS load the bases, no outs, Antonio Garcia hits a absolute laser that is snagged by the shortstop, double off our guy at 2nd.  Flyball out to center, on to the 10th inning…Gamerz load the bases, no outs, Carlos Oquita gets a strike out.  Next guy hits a line drive to second base, doubles their runner off 1st…on to the bottom of the 10th… Carlos Oquita hits a walk off homerun.  Game finally over!  Perhaps the greatest game in my 25 years of coaching the STARS.   Carlos Oquita – tournament MVP.

Just to put a cherry on top of the “weekend sundae”… the brand new San Diego STARS 7U team played their very 1st kid pitch game against the 8U San Marcos Aztecs.  STARS 12 – Aztecs 1.  STARS throw 6 different pitchers and give up one run.  THE TRADITION CONTINUES!

Thanks for everyone’s participation!

STARS win 7U World Series in amazing fashion!!

Incredible week of baseball at the  7U World Series in West Covina, California.  The San Diego STARS got off to a very rocky start to the World Series going 0 – 4 in pool play.  As if losing all 4 of their pool games was not challenging enough, the STARS began Friday by losing their 1st  game in the double elimination phase to the FCBA Cobras 8 – 0.  Now in the losers bracket, the climb began with the afternoon win, the teams first of the tournament…STARS 9 – NLB Baseball 1…bringing Friday to a close.  Saturday morning saw a shake-up in the lineup and a need to win 3 games in one day…the challenge of the “losers bracket”.  Game one of the day pitted the STARS against the tournament #1 seed – Pico Pride.  STARS jump out early and win 11-3.  2 wins in a row.  Game two of the day…rematch against the FCBA Cobras…different result…STARS 10, Cobras 2.  3 wins in a row.  The third game of the day against the #2 seed in the tournament, Chino Hills Thunder.  STARS win again 17 – 3.  4 wins in a row.
Sunday, the final day, finds only 2 teams remaining.  The STARS will have to beat their arch rival SGV Hustle from San Gabriel Valley. The organization that just two weeks earlier, in the semi-finals in East Cobb, Georgia, knocked the STARS out of the 10U World Series.

Let the games begin!!

The first game saw the STARS jumping out in front and never looking back.  STARS win 9 – 2.  5 wins in a row.  So it all comes down to one game.

THE GAME!  Once again the STARS jump in front 4 – 0, but for the first time in the last 6 games the opponent goes ahead by scoring 9 runs.  The STARS fight back to tie the  game at  9 – 9.  In the bottom of the 5th inning the Hustle go up 13 – 9.  Top of the 6th…just 3 outs left.

THE FINAL INNING!!.  Here we go…first batter for the STARS grounds out to shortstop.  Then single, hit batter, single, error, single makes the score 13 – 11.  Then a strikeout for the 2nd out of the inning.  Still 2 men on base…down 2 runs.  Next batter is down to his final strike…singles.  Runner scores…now 13 – 12.  Next batter with 2 strikes…down to his final strike drives in the tying run.  13 – 13!  Next batter singles…STARS take the lead 14 – 13.  Then a walk to re-load the bases.  Single drives in 2 more 16 – 13.  Another single drives in the final run 17 – 13.  All this with 2 outs and down to our final strike…twice.  The Hustle go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Game over!!  6 wins in a row!

In my 25 years of running the San Diego STARS this is the most amazing week of baseball I’ve ever experienced.

Congrats to the boys,
Coach Gabriel
